Euro area unemployment down 1.2 percent
The seasonally adjusted euro area unemployment rate was 7.0 percent in December 2021, down from 7.1 percent in November 2021 and 8.2 percent in December 2020. In December 2021, the EU unemployment rate was 6.4 percent, down from 6.5 percent in November 2021 and 7.5 percent in December 2020. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office, publishes these figures.
Eurostat indicates that 13.612 million men and women in the EU were unemployed in December 2021, with 11.481 million in the euro area. In November 2021, the number of unemployed in the EU declined by 210,000 and by 185,000 in the euro area. In comparison to December 2020, unemployment in the EU declined by 2.196 million and in the euro area by 1.828 million.
Youth Unemployment
In December 2021, the EU had 2.748 million unemployed young people (under 25), of which 2.222 million lived in the euro area. In December 2021, youth unemployment in the EU and euro area was 14.9 percent, down from 15.3 percent in the EU and 15.4 percent in the euro area the previous month. Youth unemployment declined by 81,000 in the EU and 78,000 in the euro region in November 2021. Youth unemployment in the EU declined by 385,000 compared to December 2020 and by 323,000 in the euro area.
Unemployment by sex
Women’s unemployment in the EU was 6.6 percent in December 2021, down from 6.8 percent in November 2021.
In December 2021, the unemployment rate for males was 6.1 percent, down from 6.2 percent in November 2021. Women’s unemployment in the euro area fell from 7.5 percent in November 2021 to 7.3 percent in December 2021, while men’s unemployment fell from 6.8 percent to 6.7 percent.
