Treasuries Rise as Investors Seek Havens From Risk-Asset Slide

Treasuries edged higher across most maturities, fueled by demand for havens after a plunge in precious metals spilled over into other markets.

Yields on US 10-year debt fell one basis point to 4.23% as Nasdaq futures pointed to a 0.6% fall in the tech-heavy index on Monday. That came as investors sold all kinds of risky assets following an extended slide in gold and silver.

Bank of England Set to Hold Rates With Eye on UK Jobs Downturn

The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates on hold at 3.75% this week as policymakers weigh contradictory signs that the economy is both strengthening and losing jobs with unemployment at a near five-year high.

The Monetary Policy Committee is treading carefully having cut rates from 5.25% since August 2024. Its nine members remain divided over where they will settle — economists estimate the “neutral” rate to be between 3% and 3.5% — but minutes from the last meeting in December showed they have agreed to move more slowly barring an unexpected turn of events.

China’s Weak 2026 Start Bolsters Case for Early Policy Easing

China’s economy stumbled into the new year, bolstering the case for Beijing to ramp up policy support in coming weeks as strong exports failed to offset weak domestic demand.

Official purchasing managers’ indexes released over the weekend suggested an unexpected and broad slowdown in January, with activity in the non-manufacturing sector contracting at the worst pace since late 2022.
