Fed’s Waller Says September Rate Decision Hinges on August CPI
Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said his next decision on interest rates will be “heavily influenced” by August inflation data due next week, adding it may not take much to nudge him toward supporting a rate hike at the Fed’s upcoming policy meeting.
“If there is continued progress toward our 2% goal, then I am willing to support holding the policy rate at its current level,” Waller said Thursday in remarks prepared for an event hosted by Reuters. “But if inflation comes in hot, I would consider a rate hike.”

Europe’s Gas Gamble Risks Higher Prices in Global Supply Fight
Europe is nearing the end of summer with a low natural gas buffer, threatening to intensify a global fight for supply.
The region still needs over 100 terawatt-hours of gas worth more than €7 billion ($8.1 billion) at current prices to reach even its lowest storage target of 75%, according to Bloomberg calculations. Getting there would require an injection pace not seen this late in the season since the 2022 energy crisis, and risks pushing winter prices above €100 a megawatt-hour, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Rystad Energy and Morningstar Inc.

BOJ Is Said to Favor Quarter-Point Hike, Flexible on Future Path
The Bank of Japan is leaning toward raising its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point this month in response to upward price risks, while leaving open the possibility of accelerating the pace of hikes thereafter, according to people familiar with the matter.
BOJ officials will mull an increase in the policy rate from 1% at the two-day meeting ending on Sept. 18, according to the people. They continue to see inflation risks as skewed to the upside, with service prices and ongoing weakness in the currency strengthening the case for action, the people said.
