Energy prices were the primary driver of the monthly increase. Shelter costs also increased 0.4%, adding to inflationary pressures. Electricity prices rose 0.2%, while natural gas prices declined 0.3% over the month.
Excluding food and energy, the all items less food and energy index rose 0.3% in September, matching the increase recorded in August. The medical care index increased 0.1%, supported by higher hospital service costs, while prescription drug prices declined 1.2%. Communication services fell 0.2% during the month, and household furnishings and operations were unchanged.
For the 12 months ending in September, the all items index rose 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August. The all items less food and energy index increased 2.6% over the year, accelerating from 2.4% in the prior month. The energy index advanced 20.4% year-over-year, driven largely by a 34.2% increase in gasoline prices, while the food index rose 2.5% over the same period. Shelter prices increased 3.2% year-over-year, while notable gains were also recorded in airline fares, education, recreation, and medical care.
