US Housing Starts Fall to One of the Worst Paces Since Pandemic
New US residential construction declined in September to one of the weakest paces since the pandemic and building permits for single-family homes slid, highlighting a languishing housing market.
Housing starts decreased 5.2% to an annualized rate of 1.22 million, a four-month low, according to federal government data released Tuesday.

A measure of French bond risk breached a key level on Tuesday, underscoring the challenges facing the government as it struggles to tame the budget deficit and grapples with cost-of-living protests.
The extra yield investors demand to hold French 10-year bonds over safer German debt rose through 150 basis points to reach 154, the widest since Oct. 2.

Japan’s Katayama Vows Fiscal Prudence on Defense Funding
Japan will take fiscal sustainability into account as it considers how to fund increased defense spending, the nation’s finance minister said, after local media reported that the government was weighing an additional corporate tax hike to finance the measure.
“The relevant ministries and agencies are currently building up realistic and concrete discussions on the specifics of our defense capabilities and the level of defense spending needed to achieve them,” Satsuki Katayama told reporters on Tuesday.
