Euro area unemployment at 6.2% and EU at 5.8%

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the euro area was 6.2% in January 2025, down from 6.5% in January 2024 but constant from December 2024. In January 2025, the unemployment rate in the EU was 5.8%, a decrease from 6.1% in January 2024 but stable compared with December 2024.


Eurostat estimates that 12.824 million persons in the EU, of whom 10.655 million in the euro area, were unemployed in January 2025.

 

  • Compared with December 2024, unemployment decreased by 8 thousand in the EU and by 42 thousand in the euro area.
  • Compared with January 2024, unemployment decreased by 510 thousand in the EU and by 547 thousand in the euro area.

Youth unemployment

 

It is reported that 2.856 million young people (those under 25) in the EU were unemployed in January 2025, with 2.263 million of those individuals living in the euro area. In the EU, the rate of youth unemployment remained constant at 14.6% in January 2025, similar to the previous month. In the euro area, the rate of youth unemployment fell to 14.1% from 14.2% in December 2024.  

 

  • Compared with December 2024, youth unemployment increased by 17 thousand in the EU and increased by 3 thousand in the euro area.
  • Compared with January 2024, youth unemployment increased by 39 thousand in the EU, and by 93 thousand in the euro area.

Unemployment by sex

 

In January 2025, the EU’s unemployment rate for women and men remained at 6.0% and 5.6% respectively from the previous month. In the euro area, the unemployment rate for men remained 6.0% from the previous month, and the rate for women was 6.4%, unchanged from the previous month.
