November’s Jobless rates up in 386 metro areas and down in 3

Unemployment rates trended upward for the month of November in 386 of the 389 metropolitan areas and lower in 3 areas compared to twelve months earlier. According to Bureau Labor Statistics (BLS), “a total of 63 areas had jobless rates of less than 4.0% and 12 areas had rates of at least 10.0%.” Non-farm payroll employment fell in 242 metropolitan areas and was stable in the remaining 147 areas. The national unemployment rate as of November 2020 rose to 6.4%, not seasonally adjusted, up from 3.3% a year earlier.

Metropolitan Division Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Eleven of the most populous metropolitan areas are made up of 38 metropolitan divisions, which are separately identifiable employment centers. Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, MI, in November, experienced the highest unemployment rates among the divisions, 11.3%. Whereas, Nashua, NH-MA, experienced the lowest unemployment rate among the divisions of 3.7%.

Moreover, BLS stated that, “in November, all 38 metropolitan divisions had over-the-year unemployment rate increases, the largest of which were in Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, MI, and New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ (+7.1 percentage points each). The smallest rate increase occurred in Nashua, NH-MA (+1.2 percentage points), followed by Dutchess County-Putnam County, NY, and Montgomery County-Bucks County Chester County, PA (+1.4 points each).”

Metropolitan Division Nonfarm Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Nonfarm payroll employment fell in all 38 metropolitan divisions over the year. The largest over-the-year decline in employment among the metropolitan divisions took place in New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ (-756,100), followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach Glendale, CA (-386,100), and Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights, IL (-274,100).

Furthermore, the largest over-the-year percentage decreases in employment were observed in n Haverhill-Newburyport Amesbury Town, MA-NH (-10.6%), and Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, MI, and New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ (-10.3% each).
