US Banks to See New Mortgage Capital Requirements in Basel Plan
US lenders are poised to see new mortgage-loan requirements as the Federal Reserve comes closer to unveiling a long-awaited bank capital proposal tied to Basel III.
Michelle Bowman, the Fed’s top bank cop, said parts of that new measure related to residential real estate would consider increasing the “risk sensitivity” of capital requirements for mortgage loans on bank books.
Europe:
European Gas Hits Five-Week Low as Weather Outlook Turns Milder
European natural gas futures hit a five-week low as the weather outlook shifted milder, potentially easing strains on rapidly depleting fuel inventories.
Benchmark contracts dropped as much as 6.9%, following a slide in US gas prices that were also pushed lower by warmer temperatures.

Japan Yield Curve Twist-Steepens on Fiscal Concerns, BOJ Outlook
Japan’s super-long bond yields climbed as shorter-term rates fell, in what is known as a twist-steepening of the yield curve, as investors mull the outlook for fiscal policy and the Bank of Japan’s rate-hike path.
The 30-year bond yield rose about five basis points, and the 40-year rate jumped seven basis points. Shorter maturities were bought as data Monday showed Japan’s economic output in the fourth quarter of 2025 was much weaker than expected, prompting investors to slightly pare back bets on BOJ rate hikes.
