U.S. CPI increased by 0.2% in January 2026

February 13, 2026

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI‑U) increased by 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis in January 2026. Over the past 12 months, the all items index rose 2.4% before seasonal adjustment.

Shelter costs advanced 0.2% in January and were the principal contributor to the monthly increase. The food index also rose 0.2%, with both food at home and food away from home posting modest gains. These movements were partly offset by a 1.5% decline in the energy index.

Excluding food and energy, the all items index increased 0.3% in January. Categories registering increases included airline fares, personal care, recreation, medical care, and communication. Major components that declined over the month included used cars and trucks, household furnishings and operations, and motor vehicle insurance.

For the 12 months ending in January, the all items less food and energy index increased 2.5%. The energy index edged down 0.1% year‑over‑year, while the food index advanced 2.9% over the same period.
