US retail and food service sales was down 1.9% in December 2021

Advance estimates of December 2021 retail and food service sales in the United States were $626.8 billion, down 1.9% (±0.5%) from the previous month but 16.9% (±0.9%) higher than December 2020. Total sales for the first twelve months of 2021 were up 19.3% (±0.5%) over the same period in 2020.

Total sales increased 17.1% (±0.7%) from October to December 2021 compared to the same period the previous year. The percentage change from October 2021 to November 2021 was amended from 0.3% (±0.5%)* to 0.2% (±0.3%)*.

Retail trade sales fell 2.1% (±0.4%) in November 2021, but were up 14.4% (±0.7%) over the previous year. From December 2020 to December 2020, gasoline stations increased by 41.0% (±1.6%), while food services and drinking establishments increased by 41.3% (±4.0%).
