Volume of retail trade decreased by 2.3% in euro area and by 1.9% in EU

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 2.3% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU during July 2021, compared with June 2021, according to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union. It was noted that, “In June 2021, the retail trade volume increased by 1.8% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU.”

In comparison to July 2020, the calendar adjusted retail sales index rose by 3.1% in the euro area and by 3.8% in EU, in May 2021.

Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State

In comparison to June 2021, the volume of retail trade decreased in the euro area by 3.5% for non-food products and by 0.7% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 1.6% for automotive fuels. “In the EU the volume of retail trade decreased by 2.9% for non-food products, by 0.9% for automotive fuels and by 0.7% for food, drinks and tobacco,” as indicated by the Eurostat.

Furthermore, among the member states, Eurostat noted, the highest monthly decreases in total retail trade were observed in n Ireland (-5.9%), Germany (-5.1%) and Austria (-3.9%). The highest increases were observed in Croatia (+2.5%), Malta (+2.3%) and Luxembourg (+2.2%).

Annual comparison by Retail Sector and by Member State

According to Eurostat, “In the euro area in July 2021, compared with July 2020, the volume of retail trade increased by 4.8% for non-food products, by 1.1% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.6% for automotive fuels.” Additionally, in the EU, the volume of retail trade climbed by 2.0% for automotive fuels, by 5.7% for non-food, and increased by 1.3% for food, drinks and tobacco.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in total retail trade were recorded in Bulgaria (+20.2%), Croatia (+12.9%) and Lithuania (+12.4%). Decreases were registered in Luxembourg (-5.6%), Austria (-2.4%), Germany (-0.3%) and Spain (-0.1%).
