Volume of retail trade increased by 1.5% in both the euro area and EU

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade rose by 1.5% in the euro area and the EU during October 2020, compared with September 2020, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. However, in September 2020, the retail trade volume fell by 1.7% in the euro area, while in the EU, a 1.3% decrease was observed.

In comparison to October 2019, October 2020’s calendar adjusted retail sales index rose by 4.3% in the euro area and by 4.2% in EU.


Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State

In comparison to September 2020, the volume of retail trade rose in the euro area in October 2020 by 3.7% for automotive fuels, by 2.0% for all non-food products, food, drinks, and tobacco. In the EU, “the volume of retail trade increased by 2.0% for non-food products and by 1.9% for food, drinks and tobacco while automotive fuels fell by 3.4,” as indicated by the Eurostat.

Furthermore, among the member states, Eurostat noted, “the highest increases in the total retail trade volume were observed in Denmark (+8.3%), Croatia (+6.5%) and France (+2.8%), while decreases were registered in Slovenia (-1.4%), Slovakia (-1.2%), the Netherlands (-0.7%) and Luxembourg (-0.3%).”
