Production in construction up by 0.3% in euro area and by 0.2% in EU

According to estimates from the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat), in July 2022, compared with June 2022, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector increased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU. In June 2022, production in construction decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU. A comparison of July 2022 versus July 2021 revealed that production in construction increased by 1.5% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU.

In July 2022, relative to June 2022, civil engineering in the euro area decreased by 0.6%, while building construction rose by 0.3%. For the same comparable period, civil engineering in the EU decreased by 0.9%, while building construction rose by 0.2%.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest month over month decreases in production in construction were recorded in Austria and Slovenia (both -4.2%), Czechia (-2.9%) and Sweden (-1.3%). The largest month over month increases were observed in Spain (+6.7%), Hungary (+5.7%) and Slovakia (+3.1%).

As it relates to the annual comparison, civil engineering increased by 1.7% and building construction by 1.4% in the euro area in July 2022 relative to July 2021. In the EU, civil engineering increased by 1.3% and building construction by 1.2%.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases in production in construction were observed in Sweden (-8.7%), Spain (-5.2%) and Czechia (-2.7%). The largest annual increases were recorded in Slovenia (+28.5%), Romania (+8.3%) and Austria (+7.6%).
