U.S. Unemployment rate declined to 3.5% in September

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 136,000 in September as the unemployment rate declined to 3.5% based on information collected by The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job growth occurred in health care and in professional and business services.

Household Survey Data

Unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage point to 3.5% in September. Notably, there were 5.8 million recorded for the number of unemployed persons, a decline by 275,000 persons.

Among the major worker groups, teenagers had the highest unemployment rates (12.5%). As for the other groups, whites (3.2%), adult men (3.2%), adult women (3.1%), blacks (5.5%), Asians (2.5%) and Hispanics (3.9%).

In September, the number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 339,000 to 1.9 million. The number of the persons who have been jobless for 27 weeks or more

was slightly changed at 1.3 million and accounted for 22.7% of the unemployed.

Establishment Survey Data 

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 136,000 in September while average employment growth averaged 161,000 per month thus far in 2019, compared with an average monthly gain of 223,000 in 2018. In relation to job being gained in September 2019, notable increases were observed in health care with an increase in 39,000 jobs and in professional and business services with an increase of 34,000 jobs.
