Unemployment rate stood at 7.7% in the euro area and 7.1% in EU

In June 2021, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area was 7.7%, down from 8.0% in May 2021. The unemployment rate in the EU was 7.1% in June 2021, down from 7.3% in May 2021 and from 7.3% a year earlier. In June 2021, the number of people unemployed in the European Union decreased by 487 000 compared to the previous month. The rate of unemployment in the euro area decreased by 423 000, in comparison to May 2021. Eurostat noted, “Eurostat estimates that 14.916 million men and women in the EU, of whom 12.517 million in the euro area, were unemployed in June 2021.”

In June 2021, 2.967 million young people were unemployed in the EU. The figure includes 2.431 million in the euro area. Compared to the same month in 2020, the youth unemployment rate decreased by 152,000 in the EU and by 110,000 in the euro area. Also compare to the previous month youth unemployment declined by 112,000 in the EU and by 78,000 in the euro area. “In June 2021, the youth unemployment rate was 17.0% in the EU and 17.3% in the euro area, down from 17.6% and 17.9% respectively in the previous month,” Eurostat noted.

The unemployment rate for women in the EU was 7.5% in June 2021, down from 7.8% in May 2021. The rate for men was 6.7% in June 2021, less than May 2021 7.0%. while in the euro area unemployment rate for women declined month over month to 8.2% from 8.4% in May 2021. Men’s unemployment rate in the euro area went down from 7.6% in May 2021 to 7.3% in June 2021.
