The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose by 0.3% on a seasonally adjusted basis in September 2025, following a 0.4% increase in August. Over the past 12 months, the all items index increased by 3.0% before seasonal adjustment.
The gasoline index surged by 4.1% in September, making it the largest contributor to the overall monthly increase. As a result, the energy index rose by 1.5%. The food index increased by 0.2%, with the food at home index rising by 0.3% and the food away from home index edging up 0.1%.
Excluding food and energy, the all items index increased by 0.2% in September, down from the 0.3% rise in each of the two preceding months. Notable increases were observed in shelter, airline fares, recreation, household furnishings and operations, and apparel. Meanwhile, motor vehicle insurance, used cars and trucks, and communication were among the few major indexes that declined.
Over the last 12 months, the all items index rose by 3.0%, slightly up from the 2.9% increase recorded for the 12 months ending in August. The index for all items less food and energy also increased by 3.0% over the past year. The energy index rose by 2.8%, while the food index increased by 3.1% over the same period.
