Production in construction remains unchanged in euro area and falls 0.3% in EU28

Seasonally adjusted production in the construction remained unchanged in the euro area (EA19) and fell by 0.3% in the EU28 in June compared with May 2019. According to Eurostat’s first estimates stated in May 2019, “production in construction decreased by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU28. In June 2019 compared with June 2018, production in construction increased by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU28.”

Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State:

Within the euro area in June 2019, building construction rose by 0.3% relative to May 2019, while civil engineering went down by 0.5%. In the EU28, civil engineering decreased by 0.5% and building construction by 0.2%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (-6.7%), Romania (-2.8%) and Portugal (-1.4%). Hungary (+1.7%), France (+1.2%) and Czechia (+1.0%) experienced the highest increases.

Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State:

For June 2019 building construction went up by 1.5% and civil engineering by 0.8% in the euro area relative to June 2018. Moreover, in the EU28, civil engineering rose by 1.4% and building construction by 0.5%. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were observed in Romania (+23.3%), Hungary (+20.2%) and Slovenia (+5.5%).

Furthermore, decreases were observed in Slovakia (-2.1%), the United Kingdom (-2.0%), Sweden (-0.9%) and Belgium (-0.3%).
